Museum: Turrentine’s “A Romance of Education”

A Romance of Education
by Samuel Bryant Turrentine

Summary:
Rev. Dr. Samuel B. Turrentine was the College’s ninth president from 1913-1935. In A Romance of Education, he chronicles the early history of education in the Greensboro, N.C. area from early 1800s and the development of Greensboro Female College from 1838 to 1935. Through personal letters and narratives of various people, in addition to old papers and documents here at the school, Dr. Turrentine was able to present accounts of events from multiple perspectives.

Interpretive:
Dr. Turrentine’s book was the first truly comprehensive text written about the College’s history and remains the single best reference source for information relating the early years of the College, despite the fact that there is sometimes contradictory information about events due to the use of multiple accounts. It is these multiple accounts, however, that give the book its identity. By reading Dr. Turrentine’s book, one is able to easily recognize the important role that the College has played in the development of women’s education.
